One evening in London: how much I really spent and where the money went

I am used to evenings in Dubai: wide roads, clear routes, prices that are easy to read. In London everything is different. The city is denser, moving around is more complex, and expenses hide in details.

I decided to break down one specific evening: from leaving the apartment to coming back. No general words — only numbers and impressions. This helps to understand the budget in advance and not be surprised by small things.

Start: transport and first expenses

I left around 18:00. In Dubai I would call a taxi and not think. In London — a combination of метро and walking. The fare — about £3. It does not seem much, but it is important to remember: each transfer can add to the total.

At this stage it is already clear that evening in the city expenses here are made of small steps, not one big payment.

Coffee and a pause: a small expense that repeats

Before the meeting I stopped for coffee. £4 for a regular latte. In Dubai the price can be higher, but there it is part of planning. Here — spontaneous, and these stops add up.

If you add a dessert or water — plus another £2–3. Already around £6–7 for a short break.

Main plan: dinner and atmosphere

I chose a simple place without booking. Average bill: £18–25 for a dish and a drink. I spent £22. Important: service is not always included, and sometimes it is added separately.

The atmosphere is worth the money: noise, people, light. This is why you go out in the evening.

Moving between spots

After dinner I decided to change the area. Another ride — again about £3–4. In Dubai such movements are usually longer, but simpler. In London — faster, but more expensive over the whole evening.

If you move often, the budget grows unnoticed.

Small expenses that are easy to miss

  • Water or a drink on the go — £2–3
  • Tips or service — £2–5
  • Spontaneous dessert or snack — £3–6

It seems minor, but for the evening it is another +£10–15.

End of the evening: way back

Return — another £3–5. If late, you can take a taxi — that is already £15–25. I chose the metro to keep the budget.

Total numbers for the evening

My evening looked like this:

  • Transport: £9–12
  • Coffee and small things: £6–10
  • Dinner: £22
  • Extra: £10–15

Total: about £45–60 for a regular evening without excess.

What I would do differently next time

I would choose one area in advance and not move unnecessarily. And, probably, skip spontaneous purchases. In London the budget depends not on one decision, but on a series of small choices.

If I want to compare approaches to evenings, I sometimes go back to notes in the blog or review my impressions about evening walks and neighborhood routes.
